Karen Mak R11 1

Karen Mak

  • Senior Research Fellow in Global Epidemiology

University College London

Dr Karen (Hei Wan) Mak is a Senior Research Fellow in Epidemiology and Statistics in the Department of Behavioural Science & Health at University College London, and is affiliated with the Social Biobehavioural Research Group designated at the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Arts & Health. Her research focuses on how social, cultural and community engagement is associated with improvements in health and wellbeing, and identifies enablers and barriers to engagement across the UK and worldwide.

Karen co-leads the UCL Health of the Public Creative Health Community and regularly organizes workshops on arts and health for UCL staff and students across disciplines. She has received research funding from UKRI ESRC and MRC as Principal and Co-Investigator, and has been awarded the Elsevier and the US-UK Fulbright Commission Researchers' Choice Communication Award, WeAreTheCity's 2022 Rising Star Award in Education and Academia, and named a World Economic Forum Global Shaper.
