Who Gets to Enjoy Green Spaces in NYC?

Art we saw this fall
June–September 2022 | Installation by Mona Chalabi: The Gray-Green Divide
Environmental Justice in Brooklyn Communities
This site-specific installation by artist and data journalist Mona Chalabi, illustrates New York City’s most common trees on the front steps of Brooklyn Museum. In playful drawings and data-driven visualisations, Mona investigated why trees matter. Not only do trees create shade and shelter, reduce energy needs, and remove air pollution but access to trees also affects physical and mental wellness. When many New Yorkers were confined to their homes due to COVID-19, extreme heat and unequal proximity to cool green space became, and remain, heightened public health issues.
9 July 2022 | Art Talk and Nature Walk
Lauren Zelaya (project organizer and Director of Public Programs, Brooklyn Museum) gave a talk about Mona Chalabi's outdoor installation The Gray-Green Divide. Afterwards, Antonia Estela Pérez (artist, herbalist, and co-founder of Herban Cura) led an interactive nature walk exploring the medicinal and cultural properties of local plants and trees. The program began with an outdoor talk on the plaza steps and continued with an exploratory walk through the neighbourhood.
