Hospital Rooms
Art Project Briefing
On the frontline of a mental health crisis, exacerbated by COVID-19, London’s Hospital Rooms charity transforms the often hostile environments of inpatient mental health facilities through the power of art. Funding from the Artists Response Fund is supporting Hospital Rooms in evidencing the positive impact of arts intervention projects in mental health hospitals at the local, national, and international level and influencing strategic and wide-reaching change, specifically the evaluation of their groundbreaking project at Springfield Hospital, London, and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust, in partnership with Norwich University of the Arts.
About the Artists:
Tim A. Shaw (artist) and Niamh White (curator) founded Hospital Rooms, a charity that radically transforms inpatient mental health hospitals by bringing together artists and patients. Since their first project at Phoenix Unit in 2016, they have completed several ambitious projects and have commissioned more than 100 site-specific artworks and led hundreds of workshops, collaborating with artists including Sonia Boyce, Julian Opie, Tschabalala Self, Anish Kapoor, Richard Wentworth, and Mark Titchner.
